Information literacy is a very important component of the K-12 curriculum in the 21st century society. In this information-rich world, our students must develop research techniques early on to successfully select, evaluate, and use information appropriately and effectively in all formats. Information literacy is built upon the collaborative efforts of media specialists and teachers to help their students learn and how to use the various research tools and resources available. Information literacy skills also match the higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
Jamie McKenzie, nationally acclaimed information literacy and technology expert, suggests that we think of students as “infotectives” … a student thinker capable of asking great questions about data (with analysis) in order to convert the data into information (data organized so as to reveal patterns and relationships) and eventually into insight (information which may suggest action or strategy of some kind). (McKenzie, 1998)
